Sickness begs comfort. When sickness came calling as a child, curled up on the couch with a “comfort” or blanket in front of the warmth of the wood stove eased the crummy feelings of the ailment. The cool hand on the fevered brow, the soothing drink for the aching throat and the peppermint tea for the nauseous stomach all were instrumental in bringing comfort.

Searching for Comfort

When worry, doubts and anxiety come calling there is comfort to be gained. There are times when the mind is swirling with a myriad of thoughts. Decisions to be made, distressing news to grapple with, and disturbing problems to deal with all are part of life here on earth. We long for help from the burdens that oppress us. There is a need for something to alleviate the troublesome thoughts that continually bedevil us. Furthermore, we frantically search for a “comfort” to wrap ourselves in and bring easement to our troubled soul.

You may be dealing with the turmoil of a medical diagnosis, or the heartbreak of a rebellious child. There may be anxiety that riddles your tumultuous thoughts. However there is consolation to be found. The Hebrew writer reminds us that there is One who has been “touched with the feeling of our infirmities”. Furthermore, we have a place to go to that will bring help and comfort, just as I found comfort on the couch with the warmth of the fire and my family radiating around me.

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

Hebrews 4:16

Be encouraged with the knowledge that we have a Savior that understands. In addition, there is grace that is available in our time of need.

Swirling Thoughts

I am reminded of the Psalmist when he was faced with troubles on every side. It felt like he was slipping into a chasm of darkness. In that instance, he cried unto the Lord and found himself held by the mercies of God.

This same writer in the following verse referred to a time when his thoughts came in droves and could not be quieted. It seems like distress had overwhelmed his soul from the continuous circle of speculations and ponderings that swirled in his mind.

“In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.”

Psalm 94:19

In the midst of his cogitation anxiety began to overwhelm. Doubts and fears became prevalent. Furthermore, worrisome thoughts were put on rerun. I’ve been there when thoughts could not be stilled and the doubts and worries would not be quieted.

Wrapped in the Comforts of God

comfort

When we are faced with swarming thoughts that cannot be stilled we must do as the Psalmist did. In this situation, He found consolation in the comforts of God. Similarly, the comforting touch of the Master will soothe our fevered thoughts. Drinking from the fountain of God’s Word will bring healing to the aching heart. God’s comforts can bring peace to our troubled soul. He will wrap us in his arms and in His Presence will be found a refreshment for the soul.

To sum it up, when your thoughts have revved into overdrive and anxieties threaten to derail you turn to the comforts of God. Again and again seek his help. Over and over find the renewal your soul needs in the Presence of the Almighty. He is faithful and his mercies fail not. The God of all comfort will meet you in your time of need.
