Swirling rumors and mixed messages. Untruths broadcasted as truth and truth smeared into a mass of unknown ideology. We watch with breaking hearts as the foundations of our country crumble against the onslaught of the enemy. The biblical foundation our country was founded upon is being pushed aside to make way for an unbiblical agenda.
There is banning and censorship. Isolation and insults. Realization that life is a spiritual battle of unbelievable proportions has never been more clear.
“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
Psalm 11:3
Fear and Foundations
When faced with our foundations being destroyed, what can we as Christ-followers do? We must not give in to the gripping fears and false narratives that is depicted by the media. Instead we must lift up our hearts to the God who reigns over the whole earth. The One who is Truth must be paramount in our lives.
Fear has fought to gain a foothold in my life as my eyes trace the chaos and concerns portrayed in our world. Yet, I turn to God again and again. He alone holds the pen to write the ending of this story. I remind myself that God is the foundation of truth I must rest on. Paul shares this fact with his son in the faith, Timothy.
“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.” 2 Timothy 2:19
2 Timothy 2:19
My shaking world rights when I turn my heart to the sovereign and eternal God whose foundation is sure. I am wrapped in the knowledge that I am His and I am known. And I see again what I can do when all around me is being destroyed. I can place my trust solidly in the One that has gone before me these many years. I do not know what we will face in the future but by God’s grace I place my trust in the unfailing God of the Universe.
God’s Truth Remains
You, too can find a solid foundation in the truths of God’s Word. In the turmoil we are facing as a nation, the only thing that will see us through is the realization that God’s truth remains. His Word remains steadfast and solid. If you haven’t maintained that bedrock of God’s truth, go back to the Word and let it infiltrate your life once again. Seek to know the Sovereign God who still reigns on high. He alone can speak peace to your heart in these troubled times. It is only when God becomes the bedrock of our lives that we will be able to walk confidently forward.
When you are bombarded with fears too big for you, run to the refuge that God offers. Anchor yourself to the Rock Christ Jesus. Through the battle and through the storms He will stand with you. Moreover, when you see another’s’ foundation begin to crumble be the one to stand in the gap and point them back to the Truth that cannot be removed.
A Way Forward
It was just a couple days ago in a conversation with my son, he reminded me that in these uncertain times we must focus on the things inside our circle of influence. These words help to clarify my way forward in answering the question “when foundations crumble what can the Christ follower do?” Each of us have a sphere of influence that we must be faithfully focused on. Your list might look different then my list when narrowed down to specifics. We each must seek God for the specifics of our focus during this difficult season of life. On the other hand, a broad look at our focus contains a pattern to help us move forward. Consequently , I continue to be faithful in what I know.
- faithful to my God,
- devoted to spread hope in this space,
- dedicated to pointing my family to the Sovereign Lord,
- motivated to practicing the rhythms and routines of daily life,
- committed to trusting in spite of what I cannot see,
- steadfastly seeking to know God better,
- stalwartly standing for justice,
- fervently praying against spiritual darkness and
- expectantly looking for the return of Christ.
Forming Foundations
The following poem by A. M. Overton was introduced into my life as a young teen. I maintain that it helped to form the foundation of God’s truth on which I stand.
He Maketh No Mistake
My Father’s way may twist and turn,
My heart may throb and ache,
But in my soul I’m glad I know,
He maketh no mistake.
My cherished plans may go astray,
My hopes may fade away,
But still I’ll trust my Lord to lead
For He doth know the way.
Tho’ night be dark and it may seem
That day will never break;
I’ll pin my faith, my all in Him,
He maketh no mistake.
There’s so much now I cannot see,
My eyesight’s far too dim;
But come what may, I’ll simply trust
And leave it all to Him.
For by and by the mist will lift
And plain it all He’ll make,
Through all the way, though dark to me,
He maketh no mistake.
The chaos and havoc loom large in this world in which we live. On the other hand, above the tumult of this earthly sphere we have a steadfast God who makes no mistakes. He is the One who is ultimately in charge. Have you placed your confidence and trust in this One who is Sovereign above all? Is your life built on Gods sure foundation? He alone can take your fears and replace them with His peace as you follow the Master forward.
