In the darkness we can confidently hope in God. We can draw near in faith knowing that He is still at work behind the scenes of our life. There is no day so dark that God will let you slip between the cracks of your desperate circumstances. God sees and God knows.

darkness

Moses heard the heart of God for his people as he knelt in the burning desert sand. Moreover, Moses was given a glimpse of the personal aspect God wanted to have with his people. When God spoke to Moses out of the burning bush He reminded Moses that He had taken note of the suffering and heard the cries of distress exuding from the hearts of his people.

Seen and Known

When we hear the words “I see you and I hear you’ in the midst of our darkness it strengthens us to continue on. Moreover, when we are seen value is placed upon us. Furthermore, when we are heard significance is found. It is here in this passage in Exodus 3 that God reminds us that we matter. We lie at the heart of his actions. God acts on our behalf. He acts for our good.

Yet the story doesn’t work out like one would expect. Yes, the people are encouraged when Moses comes and shares with them that God has seen and heard them. They are excited and expecting deliverance. However, deliverance didn’t happen. It looked like God had failed them. The Pharaoh tightened the screws as it were. The brutality of their slavery worsened. Darkness seemed to envelop their spirits more than ever.

The narrative continues in Exodus 6. Moses cries out in distress to God. He doesn’t understand. Help had not come. Deliverance was not realized. Questions of doubt and despair mount in his heart and mind. When God spoke again to Moses, he affirmed who He was. Furthermore, God reminded Moses that he had indeed heard and seen. Rescue was certain and deliverance was sure. Even though the circumstances had degenerated and their anguish of spirit had intensified God assured Moses that He was still the God who rescued.

Darkness and the Eyes of Faith

It was with intricate steps of knowledge that God continued working. To the human eye it seemed that God had lost interest in their plight and had turned away. On the other hand, through the eyes of faith victory was sure and God was at work.

You know the story. Plagues of giant proportions began afflicting Egypt. In fact, the first three plagues afflicted the Israelites as well. It wasn’t what they expected. On the other hand, it prepared their hearts to follow the LORD God. It helped them to realize firsthand the powerful, yet personal nature of God.

How many times in the midst of our own sorrow and anguish do we forget who God is? The distress of our situation gains a stranglehold on our perspective. Our vision of God becomes clouded. Despair cloaks our spirit when we look with human eyes at the supposed rejection of God in our life.

Yet, through the eyes of faith we can realize that God is still the same today. He sees our situation. God hears the cry of our heartbroken spirit. Furthermore, God is stepping through the land mines of our life with specific purpose. It may be He is correcting a faulty dimension of Himself that has unwittingly became a part of our thinking. Or it could be that we need a broader understanding of the nature of God. However He works, God is perfecting our faith as we journey onward.

For Our Good

It is God that understands the intricacies of our heart. He works for our good. We can trust when we cannot see because we know that He sees us. When we cannot hear his voice, we can rest in the knowledge that He hears us.

Yes, God is working in the darkness of your situation. He is still engaged and active in your life. You can draw near to the mercy seat with boldness and confidence. (Hebrews 4:16) Certainly, God can be trusted to keep his promises.

Just as Moses kept his eyes on the one who was invisible, we must as well. (Hebrews 11:27) In your desperate circumstances God’s got you. You are known. You are seen. Moreover, He is acting on your behalf in the darkened backstage of your life. You are God’s valued treasure. Choose to trust Him. God sees your situation and hears your cries of anguish. To sum it up, He will not fail you.
