Satisfied With A Glimpse of Jesus

The crowd that gathered near the Jordan River heard the bold voice of John as he declared,

“Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world.”

John 1:29

There were some in that crowd that glanced at the Man that John had pointed out, then turned back to the duties of their lives. A passing glance was all they had time for. They felt no need in their life for anything different. Their glimpse of Jesus sufficed. They were satisfied with life the way it was.

On the other hand, there were those that traveled that dusty road with John that were not satisfied with a passing glance. The need for understanding just who this Lamb of God was was stronger than the path they had been walking.

Consequently, they left the dynamic speaker and walked down the road in the wake of the One whom Isaiah describes as

“he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.”

Isaiah 53:2

An Invitation to “Come and See”

When Jesus realized that they had followed him, He turned and asked them what they wanted. And then with an open heart, He said, “Come and see. ” Jesus invited them to spend the day with him. He welcomed them into his life. To see where he lived, what he ate, and how he spent his days.

With alacrity, they accepted. The Scriptures relate that they spent the rest of the day with Jesus. These two men weren’t satisfied with a passing glance. In fact, their glance became a lifelong gaze.

After the day the two disciples spent with Jesus, their lives were changed. As a result, they chose to stay with Jesus. They invited family and friends to come to Jesus. He became their focal point. Consequently, they became satisfied with Jesus. They lingered long and learned from Him.

Are You Satisfied with a Passing Glance?

Are we guilty of giving God just a passing glance? Has our schedules become so busy that we have quit looking unto Jesus in all things? Are we making do with just a glance at Jesus before we turn away to our lives and the work we must get accomplished? Have the troubles of this life overwhelmed you leaving you empty and in despair?

  • Stop and take a longer look at Jesus.
  • Acknowledge Him in all things.
  • Talk to Jesus throughout the day.
  • Share your joys and sorrows with Him.
  • It will make all the difference.

When we choose to follow Jesus down the dusty road of life, He still speaks those words of invitation, “Come and see.” He invites you to spend the day with Him. For sure and certain, Jesus wants to walk through life with you. When facing heartache, Jesus gathers you to Himself and weeps as you weep. He offers hope to the hopeless. Furthermore, Jesus gives strength to the weary and peace to the troubled heart.

It is Jesus that will give you the needed direction in your daily life. We must let that passing glance be changed into a lingering gaze.

  • Don’t be satisfied with the status quo.
  • Deepen your relationship with Jesus.
  • Take the time to sit at the feet of Jesus.
  • Rest in His Presence.
  • Linger long.
  • Look unto Jesus continually.

From the beginning to the ending of our days He remains faithful.

When Our Glance Turns into a Lifelong Gaze

The Hebrew writer says it this way,

“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith;”

Hebrews 12:2

Jesus is there when we begin this journey and He will be there when we finish this life. In addition, Jesus wants to walk with us through all the in-between days, whether they be good or bad. His invitation is open to all. Will you be satisfied with a passing glance or will you accept His invitation to come and see?

As our glimpse of Jesus turns into a lifelong gaze we can walk through this troubled world with a confidence that the Almighty God goes with us. Let’s “do life” with Jesus.

Don’t settle for less. Come and see. Come to stay.
